Locking it down

Have you seen the cost of AAC devices? I know they’re custom made and I know they serve an awesome purpose, but they’re outrageous. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before but Joel has an iPad. Compared to other AAC devices this thing was a bargain. We bought it for him the beginning of this year after watching the 60 Minutes piece about the breakthroughs kids can have with them. Joel has taken to it like a fish to water. Like I mentioned before, he was on the T.V. stand trying to move the movie icons on Netflix the other day, just like the iPad. Well I’ve noticed that if we leave him alone with his iPad, even for a few minutes, he moves things around that he shouldn’t. I’ve picked it up and noticed the icons wobbling, which mean you can delete whatever programs you want. This makes me a little bit nervous and I wanted to find a way to lock the icons or at least lock him out of some programs. Well I was doing my research today and found a link to the iOS6 preview website (http://www.apple.com/ios/ios6/). I’m glad to say that apple is owning the fact that this device is a great learning tool and changing the operating system as such. As far as I knew up until today you couldn’t do this without jailbreaking it and voiding the warranty. Way to go Apple!
